Still, it made for a good first impression. I liked what I saw, but thereвЂ™s so much more to see itвЂ™s hard to know what to make of the game.

I was about as big a warmonger as Switzerland.ДЄnd then thereвЂ™s the fact I only played sixty turns-hardly enough time to get started in Civ, let alone get a meaningful grasp on the gameвЂ™s intricacies. Why did he do it? Because I was a вЂњwarmonger.вЂќ Keep in mind, at this point I had a grand total of one military unit, and had only fought in self-defense. What else is new? Early build woes, IвЂ™m sure, but Teddy Roosevelt declared war on me apropos of nothing, midway through my demo-after the devs said heвЂ™d probably be friendly towards me. The AI seems a bit finicky at the moment. ItвЂ™s a huge shift after Civ VвЂ™s clean art deco look, and IвЂ™m still not entirely fond of this new direction. But the exaggerated colors and soft edges land this somewhere between the stylized look of Civ IV and the cartoonish look of Civilization Revolution. I donвЂ™t hate it, and it admittedly looks better in motion than it does in screenshots. It could be devastating, especially in the early game.Д«y far my favorite new feature in Civ VI is вЂњActive ResearchвЂќ though-I say, as someone who mostly pursues Science victories. Here, if the enemy destroys six tile improvements? Well thatвЂ™s two more Workers youвЂ™ll need to construct, wasting valuable turns when your city should be doing something more useful. In previous Civilization games, destroying tile improvements just meant Workers (who were most likely idle anyway) would start repairing in their downtime. One obvious consequence is, as I said, that war feels more punishing.

IвЂ™m curious how it holds up for the full game. ItвЂ™s not like previous Civs where youвЂ™d eventually have a cloud of workers all toiling away. On the other hand, the finite number of improvements to be made per Worker meant it felt almost like directing an army or an explorer. ItвЂ™s a bit more tedious in that regard (at least for me) than previous Civ games.

So the fact that this demo is now available will be good news for Civilizations fans yet to take the plunge and get this latest instalment of the series, which is also getting an update this summer which adds some interesting new features, while Australia will be included in the game for the first time and will be available as DLC later in the year too.As a habitual abuser of the вЂњautomate workersвЂќ button in previous Civilization games, this meant for that the first time I had to sit and micro-manage my workers. Of course, players can also build the Great Wall, getting a defence boost early in the game against rival aggressive civilizations like the Egyptians, for instanceвЂ¦ China also has a deadly unique unit known as the вЂњCrouching Tiger CannonвЂќ a gunpowder unit they get earlier than other civilizations, reflecting theВ fact that gunpowder was invented in the Asian country. The Chinese civilization has some unique perks in the game, such as being able to build Wonders of the World faster in the early game.

This demo is available on Steam, and lets you play 60 turns of strategy goodness as Emperor Qin Shi Huang of China. So thankfully for those sitting on the fence about whether to get Civilization VI are in luck, as game creators Firaxis has put out a demo for the game recently.

Actually, this latest iteration of the world-renowned strategy series turned out to be one of the best turn-based strategy games we have seen in quite a while as well, due to its wealth of new and exciting features, even if it had a fault or twoВ though.Д«ut maybe some who are fans of Civilization creator Sid MeierвЂ™s games have held off getting this latest instalment, perhaps waiting for developer Firaxis to release patches fixing annoying bugs that might be present in the game, or maybe areВ waiting for a demo to find out whether this latest Civ game really is their cup of tea.
